A call has been made for Nigeria to adopt the DAKKADA social reorientation model of Akwa Ibom state as a panacea to curbing the escalating rate of insecurity and social vices occasioned by the alarming level of unemployment in the country.
The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Udom Emmanuel, Directorate of Marketing and Brand Management, Mr. Sam Edoho made the call during a paper presentation at the Interactive Session with participants of the Senior Course 40 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, held recently in Uyo, the state capital.
In his lecture, titled; National Security and Youth Unemployment: The Role of DAKKADA, the Governor’s aide enlightened the visiting officers on the DAKKADA philosophy of the state, stating that Governor Emmanuel’s Dakkada message which promotes hard work, excellence, integrity and the spirit of entrepreneurship has caused a social change in Akwa Ibom, as evident in the peace and reduced level of prevalence of criminal activities in the state.
In his words, “His Excellency, Governor Udom Emmanuel in line with his leadership vision launched a much celebrated social reorientation cum human development campaign called DAKKADA, aimed at empowering the people to be masters of their destinies by taking up entrepreneurship, thereby creating employment and wealth.
DAKKADA means ‘arise’ so we tell our people to ‘rise to greatness’.
The campaign which has today been reckoned as the most successful social reorientation campaign and in fact the only surviving one in this country right now, was focused on, amongst other things, stimulating the spirit of enterprise and leading the people to the path of wealth creation. The state has been doing this through many avenues including; Business forums, intensive media campaigns, encouraging start up businesses, setting up and giving grants to over three hundred cooperative societies, encouraging commercial agriculture by providing improved seedlings to farmers, creating jobs through industrialization amongst other avenues too numerous to list”.
Mr. Edoho said that over thirty six thousand youths across the state who have registered as DAKKADA AMBASSADORS have benefited directly, while countless others have benefited indirectly.
He opined that if adopted, the motivational and inspirational messages embedded in the DAKKADA philosophy could bring about a social re-engineering and refocus the minds of the Nigerian youths from folding arms to wait for unavailable white collar jobs to imbibing the spirit of entrepreneurship.
He called for the amendment of the academic curriculum in the country to be more vocational and entrepreneurial focused, and advised the Federal Government to consider adopting the Akwa Ibom model of the DAKKADA philosophy to encourage hard work, integrity, excellence and entrepreneurship amongst Nigerian Youths.
In his response the Deputy Commandant of the college and leader of the delegation, Rear Admiral I. O. mohammed said that he was astonished by the success stories of the DAKKADA philosophy of the Akwa Ibom State Government. He advised that the philosophy be given the necessary administrative framework that can enable its sustenance beyond the span of Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration.
Speaking further, the Deputy Commandant said that he was impressed by the developmental strides of the governor, confirming that most of the projects he heard about before coming to the state, he has seen them on ground.
